Revised Proclamation: Peace Officers Memorial Day and Police Week, 2026

By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation WHEREAS, the service and sacrifice of peace officers throughout the United States merit special recognition; and WHEREAS, since the earliest days of our Republic, brave men and women have answered the call to serve and protect their communities, often at great personal risk; and WHEREAS, each year, dedicated law enforcement officers lose their lives in the line of duty while protecting their fellow citizens; and WHEREAS, section 118 of title 36, United States Code, designates May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week; and WHEREAS, pursuant to Article II, Section 1, Clause 1 (Vesting Clause) and Article II, Section 3 (Take Care Clause) of the Constitution, the President may issue proclamations to recognize national observances consistent with executive tradition: NOW, THEREFORE, I [President's Name], President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2026, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 11 through May 17, 2026, as National Police Week. I call upon the people of the United States to observe these occasions by honoring the memory of peace officers killed in the line of duty and by extending support and appreciation to their families and fellow officers. I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag of the United States at half-staff at the White House and other federal facilities on May 15, 2026, until sunset.
