The record, downloadable

Once a month the whole public record is written out as a versioned release: every Constitution Index grade (current and superseded), each member’s Constitutional Voting Record and the votes behind it, every published VFA SI Solution with its full text, SI Think Tank ideas, the “Moved toward VFA” log and the corrections log. Each dataset comes as CSV, JSON and Parquet, with a data dictionary, SHA-256 checksums and a changelog. A release is written once and never changed.

Verify a download

Every file’s SHA-256 is in the release’s SHA256SUMS.txt and manifest.json, and in the X-Content-SHA256 header of each download. Download the files and run sha256sum -c SHA256SUMS.txt (macOS: shasum -a 256 -c SHA256SUMS.txt).

Live API and researcher keys

The Constitution Index is also available live as JSON and CSV. Anonymous use is limited to 60 requests a minute; a free researcher API key raises that. See the API documentation and the terms of use.

What the data is, and is not

Grades, Solutions and Think Tank ideas are SI-generated analysis published after automated checks (a real Constitution citation, a live official-source check and an independent SI critic); they are not individually reviewed by a person. Solutions and ideas are VFA proposals, not law. Voting records are factual aggregates of public roll-call votes, not endorsements. The adoption log records a textual match, never causation. Errors: hello@valuesforamerica.com; every fix is in the corrections log. Methodology →
